Looking Back Home

Another typical Wei Kiat post, with the typical typos etc. Read at your own risk. You may drift far from elitism if your ability to spell deteriorate, so read at your own risk. And I write at my own too... -.-"

Today, being sick and tired of mugging and rescuing my remote control plane from a tree, I shall look once again at the hottest happenings in our wonderful country. First up, Mr Lee, our honorable PM.

At an appreciation event for some 2,700 IMF-World Bank volunteers last night, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: "The foreign media had another agenda — they wanted Singapore to open up, to conform to their standards, their norms.

"Whatever line we drew, they wanted to push us, to go a little bit further. But we had to decide where the line was, and stick to it."

And wow, I am astonished by newspaper's ability to switch topic within a few lines of words.

"All the S2006 delegates knew the truth. They were impressed not just with our efficiency, but also with the pride which everyone showed, and the commitment of every staff and volunteer," said Mr Lee, who congratulated the volunteers on the success of the meetings.

Mr Lee cited some examples of those who went the extra mile, such as a chauffeur who took photos of a delegate with his own digital camera and printed them as a gift.

"One officer so impressed a foreign delegate with the quality of service that he jokingly asked if she would marry him," he said.

Whee! I want to marry too! (Jokes)
And finally, we see him speaking like Dr Chee.

Said Mr Lee: "You have shown how, at a critical moment, ordinary Singaporeans can rally together, rise to the occasion and put up an extraordinary performance."

I don't remember Dr Chee using the bolded word for this kind of things though.

Next up, we have a mini quarrel between Derek Wee and Wee Shu Min a student at RJC, daughter of Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Wee Siew Kim who was also a GEP student at RJC. Get that right. The elite of the elites.

Read Derek Wee's article.

A rather insightful piece, although much of the things mentioned, most Singaporeans already know deep down in our hearts.

There are many kinds of elites. For the sake of simplicity, I shall classify them into two main groups. The first group are the "true elites", those that "I understand that I will never understand everything" or that "Knowledge is too vast a thing to fill the chalice of my mind.", while the second group, the "false elites", are more like those that feel "Knowledge is nothing. I comprehend everything. I am a genius." and being ignorant of their own ignorance.

Having defined these two groups of elites (with quotes I made up), I shall examine an entry written on that GEPer's blog, and let you decide which group to slot her into.

mom's friend sent her some blog post by some bleeding stupid 40-year old singaporean called derek wee (WHY do all the idiots have my surname why?!) whining about how singapore is such an insecure place, how old ppl (ie, 40 and above) fear for their jobs, how the pool of foreign "talent" (dismissively chucked between inverted commas) is really a tsunami that will consume us all (no actually he didn't say that, he probably said Fouren Talern Bery Bad.), how the reason why no one wants kids is that they're a liability in this world of fragile ricebowls, how the government really needs to save us from inevitable doom but they aren't because they are stick-shoved-up-ass elites who have no idea how the world works, yadayadayadayada.

Tell me who on earth can say for sure how the world works, and for the record, does an elite know about the fragility of a rice bowl to even mention it on her blog?

i am inclined - too much, perhaps - to dismiss such people as crackpots. stupid crackpots. the sadder class. too often singaporeans - both the neighborhood poor and the red-taloned socialites - kid themselves into believing that our society, like most others, is compartmentalized by breeding. ridiculous. we are a tyranny of the capable and the clever, and the only other class is the complement.

sad derek attracted more than 50 comments praising him for his poignant views, joining him in a chorus of complaints that climax at the accusation of lack of press freedom because his all-too-true views had been rejected by the straits times forum. while i tend to gripe about how we only have one functioning newspaper too, i think the main reason for its lack of publication was that his incensed diatribe was written in pathetic little scraps that passed off as sentences, with poor spelling and no grammar.

derek, derek, derek darling, how can you expect to have an iron ricebowl or a solid future if you cannot spell?

I had been trying feverishly for the past 10 minutes, but the less-than-elite mind of mine still could not figure out how spelling affects the ability to get an iron rice bowl, except in her own dreamy view of how the world works, where everything seems to lie in the hands of spelling errors and grammar mistakes.

No doubt this girl is a high flier in terms of academic. But I guess she couldn't shake away from the world of of academic results when it comes to real life. Spelling and grammar are important when you are 18 years old and writing an essay for your teachers, but unless she felt that her life consisted of only General Paper essays, she shouldn't be that much ignorant, and much like a "stick-shoved-up-ass elite who have no idea how the world works".

if you're not good enough, life will kick you in the balls. that's just how things go. there's no point in lambasting the government for making our society one that is, i quote, "far too survival of fittest". it's the same everywhere. yes discrimination exists, and it is sad, but most of the time if people would prefer hiring other people over you, it's because they're better. it's so sad when people like old derek lament the kind of world that singapore will be if we make it so uncertain. go be friggin communist, if uncertainty of success offends you so much - you will certainly be poor and miserable. unless you are an arm-twisting commie bully, which, given your whiny middle-class undereducated penchant, i doubt.

She missed the point, totally. Derek was talking more about the age factor, and not the skill factor.

then again, it's easy for me to say. my future isn't certain but i guess right now it's a lot brighter than most people's. derek will read this and brand me as an 18-year old elite, one of the sinners who will inherit the country and run his stock to the gutter. go ahead. the world is about winners and losers. it's only sad when people who could be winners are marginalised and oppressed. is dear derek starving? has dear derek been denied an education? has dear derek been forced into child prostitution? has dear derek had his clan massacred by the government?

That type of comparison won't work. For everything, there is always something or someone worst off.

i should think not. dear derek is one of many wretched, undermotivated, overassuming leeches in our country, and in this world. one of those who would prefer to be unemployed and wax lyrical about how his myriad talents are being abandoned for the foreigner's, instead of earning a decent, stable living as a sales assistant. it's not even about being a road sweeper. these shitbags don't want anything without "manager" and a name card.

please, get out of my elite uncaring face.

Seriously, if you took your time to read Derek's letter, her response was really NAQ (not answering question) in a way.

I shall draw no conclusion as to whether she belongs to the "real elites", or the fake ones.

And I shall conclude this entry by quoting my girlfriend, "I noep also never scold people so vulgarly."

Perhaps polite treatment of others is something not taught in schools of tomorrow's elites, which explained why I did not chose RI even when I easily met the criteria for it, and instead went for The Chinese High School. What a fine choice. We were taught to behave like and become real gentlemen there. Just look at my brainchild, The Wicked, ran with help from various kind TCHS juniors!

And RJC speaks up (from various forums and blogs):

i was a top student from RJC. just graduated a few years ago. most pple that i know in RJC were just too full of themselves. they thought that since they are from RJC, they are the smartest in Singapore. unfortunately, many of my RJC frens have low EQ and common sense. most only know how to memorise and practise questions, and possess very weak critical thinking skills.

To follow up on what fellow Rafflesian, Gene, said above, I would like to emphasise that the majority of us from RJC are not like Shu Min. In fact, few of us sympathise with her current “plight” (not that she is taking it badly, she was in fact laughing and mocking at the responses on various websites). What had happened also did not surprise us because she is well known in school to have an inflated sense of superiority and low tolerance of the pedestrian and the uncultured. But please remember that one Wee Shu Min does not make RJC. The rest of us from RJC should not be impeached because of her.

I'm a classmate of Shu Min in RGS and RJC. Many of us don't know her well because she does move around in her own exclusive circle of the smart and well-connected. And yes, she is conceited, overbearing and thinks that she and her clique own the world. But, I do think some of the comments here are excessive, even unreasonable. You can fault her character and her worldview, but is there a need to descend to vulgarity?

As a Rafflesian, I am saddened that our good name has been smeared by the poison pen of one elistist female. The saddest part of this episode is that she reminds me of the remark made by newbie Michael Palmer, "Before I joined the grassroots organisation, I never knew there were poor people in developed countries". Where does the PAP find such freaks? They are no better than the Hitler Youth, and our country can only be the worse because of them.

I asked a few of my own RJC contacts about her, and everyone seems to know Shu Min directly or indirectly, which is interesting. Those RJCians I know said that Shu Min is a nice girl, and this entry on her blog was very "out of character", and should not be used to judge what sort of person she is.

Who should I believe?

Well that, is something more to add on to my knowledge of AMK, other than its nice food at AMK central, and a new pirated CD stall right outside one of the bubble tea stalls there.

Well, her blog is gone, save for this interesting entry. What can I say?
I'll throw in some comments from various forums:
Nah... she's not even in the same league as xiaxue... At least xiaxue can stand by her words. This RJC GEP student close shop run road... no standard lah...

I pity Ms Wee. She has been blessed and given the best that life and education can offer. However, she has been deprive the knowledge of humility, love of a fellow human being and thus, will probably end up successful monetary wise but fail miserably in life and marriage.

She'll probably laugh at this posting and the forumers here but that fact is that we couldn't care less. We will lend her a helping hand when she at the lowest point of her life and give her hope but till then; I hope for her sake that a miracle will happen in her life.

And so we hope...

dear wei kiat,

i apologise if i have distressed you with my tendency to rant. while i will not dispute some of the points you make in response to what i have written, i would like to bring to your attention the fact that the post in question was never meant to be a cogent response to the specific points raised in derek wee's article. it is, quite obviously, a rant in the heat of the moment. in addition, i don't believe that my blog has the wide readership of derek wee's, or even your own, and my intention was more to vent my own frustrations than public denouncement.

i'd also like to clarify my use of the word "elite". while i understand how misinterpretation may have arose, i intended to use it in irony, as a label that people assume i enjoy, and not one that i take particular pleasure in.

finally, i admit that i was harsher than i should have been, although the the crux of my belief in self-improvement and self-determination has not changed. once again, i apologise if my words have unintentionally offended you - i was under the rather naive impression that nobody reads my blog :)

True characters of people are often seen when they were in the heat of the moment, or caught unguarded in situations such as being drunk.

I believe I've seen yours.

Wicked, I agree with you. She did display her true character. I am now MORE worried about our future because, she going to be our next generation leaders of Singapore.

She should be more humble, there are many things to learn in different stage of your life. Believe me, ask your parent and they will agree.

hm.. so this is how our nation's elite think.

Sort of make me want to save up more and fly to Australia in a few years' time.

Great learners in search of knowledge often discover their own humanity at the end of their journey. That's a humanistic view of the "intellectual elite" that is, alas, lost upon this new generation.

"self-determination", "self-improvement" - very debatable. to put it simply, some people are not as fortunate to be born into the relatively privileged circumstances she had/has. having a fairly stable family life, no lack of money, educated parents (that will most likely pass on their knowledge to you (and no, i'm not talking about eugenics but rather family upbringing and values etc)), etc - are factors that influence your future success in life. we aren't entirely our own and we are only self-determined to a certain extent (especially during our youth).
heh. would've been helpful if she'd been quicker to empathise and less hasty to judge; "heat of the moment" isn't much of an excuse, since "heat of the moment"s tend to be your more revealing moments.

please don't assume her behaviour's entirely representative of rafflesians and/or GEPpers, though... (although, maybe her spelling and grammar are, heh. then again, i don't like her syntax; it could do with some improvement... especially if she was trying to speak formally and convincingly - but that's a digression!).

"self-improvement and self-determination" is all very well, but 1) we are not entirely self-determined, no matter how much we'd like to believe we are (this is quite self-evident; i'm not going to start going into substantiation)
2) don't use the referencing of relatively noble ideals to hide behind what would be better-termed as simple prejudice and a lack of empathy.

to put it simply, some people try very hard in life, but they are relatively more hard-pressed by circumstances. a meritocracy (which the concept of self-determination is tied to) tries to assume (or give the impression of) equal opportunities in society, and i think our public school system does level the playing field (relative to the education systems of some other countries, where, for example, poorer families can't afford to send their children to school in a system that largely banks on private schools). but obviously, the playing field can never be completely levelled, and some circumstances of our lives are quite beyond our control.
i think she does acknowledge this to some extent, but sees it in very extreme terms (e.g. child prostitution, clan massacres, etc). maybe a more nuanced perspective will come with, uh, age and maturity. (in "her" sort of language: life is not merely cause-and-effect; life is dialectics.)

aiya, everyone who's posted here thus far has more or less echoed the same sentiments; sorry if i'm flogging the dead horse.
maybe i should've just tried to find her blog and post this there.

The Wicked rocks

Expressing feeble apologises towards something which has caused some debate is futile when things become irrevocable. Feeble apologies from the much (dis)respected Dr Chee was unable to change Goh CK's mind to sue him during the 2001 GE.

Although writing a 4-digit school code representing RJC as my top choice college will guarantee my place there, I did not. Indeed, this was one of the wisest choice I had made so far.

Anyway, I do not walk with my head tilted high up to look into the sky (or ceiling).

Do not fall into the trick.

Spelling and grammar be not everything; for there be those who discard the rules of prescriptive grammar and spelling to achieve an effect.

It's the rhetoric that matters.

Shu Min:

"i would like to bring to your attention the fact that the post in question was never meant to be a cogent response to the specific points raised in derek wee's article"

Really! I seemed to have the impression that you would want to have the largest audience possible to d'accord you. That would actually be a good thing (writing with a purpose) if not for the fact that you chose not to stick to your words. Prithee, tell me otherwise: it does not seem immediately obvious that you had not thought your post had some cogency or that you had not intended it to be a scathing criticism of the blog you attacked. I would think a good rhetorical analysis of your post would confirm this.

Shall I break down your mistakes, comrade?

Firstly, "distress" is terribly euphemistic and impertinent to the matter at hand. We are not as much distressed as much we are incensed.

Secondly, you contrasted a noun abstraction with a verb, contrasting "to vent frustrations" against "public denouncement". This is a rhetorical error. A more effective writer would continue the use of the infinitive.

Thirdly, a gross mistake was your misuse (and misconjugation) of the preterite for the verb "arise". "Arise" is a class I strong Germanic verb, do pay attention to the use of Indo-European ablaut. "arose" is a preterite; perhaps "arisen" is the past participle you are looking for.

Fourthly, "in irony" is awkward; "ironically" is a probably a better replacement. But your use is not surprising, considering that you like to hide yourself behind noun abstractions, and also omit grammatical articles to try to achieve your desired supercilious effect. I suggest you read George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". You desperately need it.

You think you're superior because you think you may have (that's modal subjunctive to you) a superior command of English than most Singaporeans. You think you're a language genius and have the edge - but you can't even distinguish between the preterite and particple Germanic ablauts of English. You think the preterite "-oh" vowel will help make up your lack of a strong argument or defence with a strong conjugation. How can you survive lah?

You talk about irony, but oh the irony!

A blog is a public domain. Stand by every word you write, or don't write it at all.

"I asked a few of my RJC contacts about her, and everyone seems to know Shu Min directly or indirectly, which is interesting. Those RJCians I know said that Shu Min is a nice girl, and this entry on her blog was very "out of character", and should not be used to judge what sort of person she is.

Who should I believe?"

Shu-min is famous for being conceited.

Jo,

As you have admitted, you are here to stand up for your friend.
Therefore, it would not be wrong to conclude that your views are deliberately thought out to "stand up" for your friend, Shu-min.

If you examine what you have written further, I think you will find the slant in your arguments against others whom you think are "unfairly bashing" Shu-min.

You have, therefore, confirm my suspicion that there are more people like Shu-min in our midst. Birds of the same feather flock together!

I can't help but recall that we have leaders who will "fix the opposition and buy voters' votes" and I think you and Shu-min belong to that group of people.

Meritocracy has led to Elitism.
Elitism has become Despotism.
Despotism will inevitably lead to Tyranny!

The future of Singapore is really very scary!

I understand you Jo.

Much as there are tonnes of people who are senselessly bashing Shu Min, notice that I had carefully restrained from that, and instead focus on points in her posting that may not sound that practical to me.

Also, if I'm not wrong, what derek was talking about was misunderstood in Shu Min's entry, and it was her harsh language which made many people unhappy.

Ultimately, I mentioned in the blog posting that it is up to the reader to decide, and even myself couldn't decide if what Shu Min did was really no in her character, or elites like her think this way.

After all, I myself made a very similar mistake once when I reacted badly to a blogger (ex-rj) regarding him posting spoilers to my game on his blog. This soon escalated into very bad reputational damage to myself due to my one mistake.

As a lesson learned, no matter how offended you are at something, it is important to calm yourself down and not make harsh statement.

The harsh statement you made about other people may come back to hunt you one day. (As seen from the fact that gssq's readers are much harsher than I can imagine.)

Personally, I am also disturbed by various inappropriate comments regarding her throughout the net, so I hope readers can behave civilizedly on this blog.

Thank you!

Yep, I've apologized to gssq soon after, but strangely he was more contented with not making any mention of that on his blog.

Anyway regarding computer club, nope I don't know anyone from NYGH while I was in there, since I joined only when I was in secondary three, after fooling around in String Orchestra for 2 years.

My violin is now in eternal hibernation.

Dear Jo,

I'm glad that Shu-min has friends who would stand up for her. She must be very grateful to you guys for standing by her throughout this period.

I am of the opinion that the rant by her is a Freudian slip. She might portray a different personality in real life, but the fact that she made this rant clearly indicates something worrying. It DOES seem to me that there is something lurking in the recesses of her mind for her to make such a callous attack on something that probably has little knowledge of.

I don't think that it is wrong of people to judge her based on what she said because those were all that people could see. And, it doesn't help that she closed down the blog. I am fine with people making mistakes, but I don't think very much of a person who chooses to run away rather than face the consequences. I would have had a much more favourable opinion of her if she kept her blog and explained why she said the things she said on her blog.

Ultimately, I think that it is evident that her post is evidence of a serious lack of understanding for certain groups of people in Singapore society. It is a fact that she went to elite schools and that she probably never had to worry about the next meal, unlike some of us. If she have had some experience of the kind of hell that the less fortunate people of Singapore had to go through (my dad was a blue collar worker with not much savings and had a liver transplant while I was in JC, my sister in secondary school and my brother in primary school), I think she wouldn't have made those comments.

Perhaps I too am guilty for a couple of harsh remarks about her on my blog, but the harsh remarks do not take away the point that this young lady needs to understand society from a different frame of reference compared to the one she knows. It is my most sincere hope that she does not laugh off the episode but instead use it as a platform to further her development as an individual.

Go spend a few months doing humanitarian work in Third World countries. Go walk around the poorer estates in Singapore and talk to the people there. Develop yourself as an individual that your parents, your institution and society can be proud of.

I remain availabe for discussion on my blog if you wish to take my points further.

Erratum:

Last sentence of the second paragraph of my previous post should read: "It DOES seem to me that there is something lurking in the recesses of her mind for her to make such a callous attack on something that she probably has little knowledge of."

I stopped reading Shu Min's blog post when I realised that her Shift key was underused. After all, if Derek's rant could be punctured by poor spelling, hers is surely marred by a chronic inability to capitalise words.

This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.

Jo,

Thank you for your show of politeness.

I am not accusing you of anything.
Please read my earlier post carefully.
I was saying: "... and I think you and Shu-min belong to that group of people".
If you have hurt feeling, I am sorry.
But you can't fault me for grouping you under that category of people, nor can I fault you on what you think of me, right?

You long clarification certainly clarified and confirmed to me what I had thought of you. Thanks for that.

Wei kiat's drop down templates are useful, how do you do it? (Also, are you a fellow schoolmate of Shu Min?)

I am bewildered as to why Shu Min doesn't respond to these allegations herself, or even took down her blog. Her father as member of parliament has to constantly respond in debate and make constant rebuttals, too bad she doesn't carry the same flair ... oops! I guess in our Parliament of pre-drafted debates and where the Opposition has little say, I guess there aren't any real debates. No wonder her parents can't teach her anything!

Jo, in your defence of Shu Min you have committed several fallacies:

1) "unlike the others who are having a whale of a time unfairly bashing someone they haven’t met (or don’t know very well). "

Well, I'm sorry. Whale of a time? It seems Shu Min also has had a whale of a time bashing bloggers she has never met. Would you consider that unfair? She made her statements public, and she had every intention to do so. We as members of the public responded.

2) "and that she genuinely means that spelling affects your ricebowl;"

Which is a fallacious idea. Language as a whole affects the ricebowl, not spelling. The blogger's rhetoric supersedes that of spelling. Effectivement (Shu Min as a French speaker should know this), Shu Min comitted the logical fallacy of the ad hominem attack.

I trust Shu Min with all her supercilious professions of her command of language would be able to understand frequently used Latin.

3) it’s just that she writes with irony, which is a very different tone from what many people are used to. Lighten up! She's making a point worth your consideration."

Oh what irony? Are you misusing the term here? Is this some great satirical piece in which she really is supporting the blogger? If not, how is it ironic? Or perhaps you mean mocking? I'm used to arguments employing irony, but I don't see how she has made a point worth my consideration with her logical fallacies.

4) "that there are many people who work hard all their lives but don’t become MPs or CEOs. However, I do see that some people online (not accusing anyone here) are merely pouncing on the fact that Shu-min is from a well-to-do family, and exploiting the opportunity to fire up the ‘us-against-them’ mentality."

Rather, it's because we're appalled at her *using* her status as part of her (weak) support for her argument, such as constantly using her "elite" status to further her point. Why should we not then turn her argument on its head?

5) "It is one thing to assess an issue rationally, and another to make ad hominem appeals. "

Talk about irony - it is Shu Min who has made all the personal attacks in her post. I suspect bloggers are only responding quid pro quo.

6) "I’m here to stand up for my friend. She does not deserve a lot of what has been said about her online, and discerning observers should be able to correctly recognise that. "

Why should we not? She made a public argument, addressed to anyone of the public who came along (as can be clearly analysed and inferred from her tone of her writing). It tells us a bit of her character, her stance and her views. The onus is not on me to trust evidence that I cannot evaluate for myself its veracity.

I'm ashamed to call Shu Min a fellow Singaporean francophone. What a waste. Her French abilities should go to someone else. Hey Shu Min: Fusses-tu autre qu'un maraud, je t'en demanderais raison! (The French past subjunctive is *not* something you will get from Babelfish, by the way.)

However, people have also made several fallacies in attacking her. I want to clear this up:

A blog is not necessarily public domain. I think it fortunate that a member of the establishment has a genuine blog (as opposed to those recent PAP bloggers), but my grievance is not that because she assumed it was a private diary, but because it was *not* a private diary. She had every intention of broadcasting her opinion of the blogger she attacked. Had it been a (subj. again) true private diary and not so arrogant, I would be more compassionate.

The MICA says bloggers must have responsbility for the words they say, and how regulations must be in place so that people can just say anything and get away with it. Well, I think we have proved that the blogosphere can be self-regulating.

It is the ability of verbal reprisal that allows this. It could have been her own genuine opinion, but without the arrogant tone and her cowardice, we would probably be more wont to address her fallacies rather than her character.

Secondly, I don't mind her use (or lack thereof) of capitalisation. Capitalisation is different from spelling or grammar: it is part of style. In fact, capitalisation only developed after the fall of the Roman Empire: before, all the great Latin writers WROTE LIKE THIS WITH NO CASE VARIATION, VENI VIDI VICI, IT SEEMS WORSE AND MORE RUDE THIS WAY NO, SO WHO ARE WE TO FAULT THOSE WHO WRITE ALL LOWERCASE. (Except they didn't see it as rude.)

even punctuation as I recall only developed somewhere following the fall of the Roman Empire too as I believe the original classical writers did without it and the original ancient Chinese authors did too I do think you can clearly read this comprehensibly I do hope though it just makes for slightly slower reading in order to make sense of the individual clauses I do believe Shu Min had the courtesy of not writing like this

It is the overal rhetoric and feel of language that matters, not just individual points of spelling and grammar. Articulation is important, but unless flaws in articulation overshadows the main theme of an argument, opponents should not bring up flaws in articulation in a rebuttal.

I can send u a copy of my blog template, just rmb to acknowledge me if you use it!
Just drop me a mail.

And no, I'm not her school/classmate, nor do I know her personally.

So many people hate Wee Shu Min aka Elitegal because they subconsciously wish they could have her luxurious apathetic view of things but can’t have.

Suddenly she becomes the hated poster girl of the Elite.

Is Elitegal that easy to hate? Or are Singaporeans just a hateful lot?

Hey Jo,
I think you've misunderstood my words.
I was not referring to her "spelling-affecting-ricebowl" remarks when I said that perhaps Shumin "sees it in very extreme terms" (with "it" referring to the limits placed on our self-determination, and the fact that the playing field can never be completely levelled). I specifically said "e.g. child prostitution, clan massacres, etc" when I gave examples of the way she perceived this inhibition of self-determination. In other words, I acknowledged that she does recognise this point about limits on self-determination; -however- her practical understanding of these limits seems to be generally restricted to people in Third World countries. (I think I explained this in my previous comment; perhaps you could re-read it if you need more clarification.)

It's not that I'm not used to irony. I'm very much acquainted with both irony, sarcasm, literary juxtaposition etc. I do know the point she was trying to make, and I have considered it, but that doesn't mean I agree (to put it really simply). I'm familiar with the ethos of the supposed self-made individual, the ideas of self-determination and meritocracy, and I do appreciate well-formed (and well-spelt) thoughts. (I come from a similar educational background.)
But some amount of intellect and eloquence don't excuse what are essential careless and hurtful sentiments. There's a difference between endorsing a theory in abstract, and actually understanding how it is applied in real life; I think Shu-min's posts have revealed this particular disconnect.

I might be coming across as taking this too ponderously, but I'm also trying to err on the side of caution by making a conscious effort to explain myself precisely. As you know, words that are carelessly couched on the internet may have pretty far-reaching consequences.

I've tried not to engage in personal attacks; and I know that Shu-min's post is not a reflection of her entire character. However, it is a reflection of a worrying aspect of her character. I have friends who echo her sentiments (with regards to similar issues) as well; they remain my friends because I have seen other sides to them that I love. I believe you feel the same way about Shu-min.

But a person's other "good characteristics" don't necessarily excuse other hurtful and/or careless things that the person has also done.

Hope I've explained more clearly here.

I don't plan to use the template per se, just the technique of suddenly having everything roll by. How do you do it? The usual CSS make visible/invisible functions don't do this.

"So many people hate Wee Shu Min aka Elitegal because they subconsciously wish they could have her luxurious apathetic view of things but can’t have."

More like, I wish I could speak fluent French. (My fluency is abysmal, c'est ca.) What a waste. Ayah, the participle features heavily in French and the distinction between the imperfect and the perfect is great, but she can't even use her English participles correctly. Ablaut features in Latin and French too, as well as Germanic.

ah, Shu Min, toi.

This is the reason why Singapore is so far behind in being an 'open' society. Part of being an 'open' society is being 'open' to alternative views. That means allowing someone to express their views, be they right or wrong, and not be too quick to jump on them and attack their character. Why is it that in Singapore there has to be a homogeneous view? The PC thing to say of course is that we all empathize with the poor, etc etc... but really, what is so wrong about saying that this is a world of hard knocks? It is not really her fault that she grew up in a different social stratum. The minority will always get bashed, and diversity will always be quashed. Ahh... the future of Singapore.

Elitegal shut down her blog and left because of all the intimidation from the crackpots.

I think you guys are missing out on a huge point in Shu Min's post:

"is dear derek starving? has dear derek been denied an education? has dear derek been forced into child prostitution? has dear derek had his clan massacred by the government?"

It's not an elite vs non-elite issue that we see. It's not an elite "who thinks she's so great therefore no one can match up to her". And it's definitely not an "RJC/Child of MP" superiority complex. What I see is someone who is venting her frustration at the fact that the public is taking OUR GOVERNMENT for granted.

I'm afraid Singaporeans have had life too easy for them. We fail to see what our government has done for us: clean roads, a green city, subsidized housing and education, scholarships and bursaries so that everyone will be given a chance for education and be duly rewarded for hard work, the Progress Package which tries to reduce the income inequality amongst us, excellent investment incentives and business facilities, cable TV, TV mobile, whatever TV, CPF (mind you, it's because of this that we have one of the highest saving rates in the world), and what have you. The list just goes on.

Clearly, Shu Min was just frustrated (ok, very frustrated) at the number of things that we Singaporeans always ask for, always complain about, but fail to realise the number of things that the goverment has done for us.

If not for the government, would we be here today, living in such a beautiful place?

We must not forget that we are such a small country. An island to be exact. Yet we have one of the most efficient governments who know how to make the best use of our scarce resources and turn our island into a truly cosmopolitan, globalised city.

It's cliche, but it's true.

I feel that Shu Min is just telling Derek, or us, that the government has laid all it has down in front of us and it's up to us to use these opportunities wisely. We can't always expect the government to be giving us everything - giving us everything on a silver platter, and not giving in return to the country.

We are one of the most developed SEA countries. It does say something about what our government has done for us, doesn't it?

And it's not just Singapore that's facing the problem of age discrimination, low birth rates, the pressure of keeping up our competitiveness: IT'S HAPPENING EVERYWHERE. It's a global problem peeps. It's not just Singapore! We are facing all these problems because of globalisation, because we're moving into a new era where we just can't afford to lose a second. Everyone just needs to keep getting younger and younger. It’s the new fact of life: We’re in the 20th century. Keep up.

We have to stop taking our good government for granted. If anyone can tell me why they aren’t a good government, please do.

I guess it was also wrong of her to make such personal attacks against Derek. But then again, that’s what you do when you’re frustrated, so just chill y’all.

And it’s not a matter of who’s smarter or more elitist, it’s whether or not one faces up to this new reality and day. Let's not be angry people, I'm sure we have better things to do =)

Pardon, "tes écrits" not "ses écrits" - halfway through I decided to use the second person to be more direct. It is my every intention to be rude, so do pardon. ("Committed" not "comitted" also, for my own errors.)

"That means allowing someone to express their views, be they right or wrong, and not be too quick to jump on them and attack their character."

Freedom of speech means being able to speak freely without coercive effect, fear of being blackmailed, fear of other things, such as imprisonment, or violence, other than the reaction to the merit of the speech itself.

However, to induce fear of not publishing something because of fearing public rebuttal of it, is not censorship. Similarly, individuals have every right to raise arguments condemning hers. Ayah, daughter of MP would surely learn how to deal with an ad hominem?

We have not prohibited her from blogging; had I been here I would be delighted at all the attention and would immediately use it to respond, heck, exploit it to further my views for everyone to see. But I guess she's not up to it.

There are of course cases of majoritarian witch-hunting but I don't think this is the case.

"Here’s a hypothetical situation:
I insult you, saying you have bad Engrish. You buay-song, you insult my physique and threaten to rape me. Passers-by insult my face, physique, and say I deserve to be raped. (this, I quote from various forums)"

This analogy doesn't quite fit our situation. For one, it is not just a random insult: it is an insult used to try to further an argument. (An ad hominem.)

In this matter, we reciprocate the vitriol given as you have decided to break the natural courtesies of discourse down. Members of the public may also join the floor and afford their own (ad hominem) comments.

Some of it is ungentlemanly. Some of it is distasteful, and doesn't help in any way - but it is an eye for an eye situation, some of the fault belonging to the instigator.

"First, I’d like to appeal for a bit of respect for her parents – they haven’t said anything against you or played a part in this entire saga, so I think it’s fairly hurtful to say that they can’t (and hence haven’t?) “[teach] her anything”. But that’s just my attitude towards issues – “you want to scold, scold, but don’t scold people’s parents”."

Yes, I used a rhetorical appeal other than the use of logic. It indeed is not an accurate reflection on her parents. Still, I defend my invocation of them - it has some reflective capability. In this environment of hostility (that Shu Min has initiated), why should I be expected to restrain myself to "be fair"? Fine lah, I exploited the situation to make a jab at the political system as a whole - but surely you detected that?

" b) vulgar comments suggesting an 18-year-old girl “should be raped”, etc.
I don’t think your responses belong to the latter, so actually thank you for that"

Don't thank me for it. See now I feel guilty for something undeserved. I take it you did not read the poem, I actually took out a few lines that would have been on the level you describe. Shame you're not a francophone. I wonder whether Shu Min's francophone abilities come from her parents or from the MOELC?

" who has worked tirelessly on various community and school projects, and who dedicates her time to the community on weekends – I’ll spare you the soppy bits"

Yet she can't stand up for her own views? What community projects are these, prithee?

"What I see is someone who is venting her frustration at the fact that the public is taking OUR GOVERNMENT for granted. "

I see a government who is taking its citizens for granted.

"scholarships and bursaries so that everyone will be given a chance for education and be duly rewarded for hard work"

You are severely illusioned. The education caste system is still there - scholarships only address a tiny tiny minority of the problem. And what of those who have the potential, but are drawn into a death spiral due to the nature of the system?

"the Progress Package which tries to reduce the income inequality amongst us, excellent investment incentives and business facilities, cable TV, TV mobile, whatever TV, CPF (mind you, it's because of this that we have one of the highest saving rates in the world), and what have you. The list just goes on."

Hmm, let me add the censorship of "out of bound" views, the censorship of anything that do not correspond with language policies (such as Chinese dialects and Singlish), which corresponds to state-sanctioned linguicide; prosecution of the opposition, no obligation to respond to citizen requests; little direct democracy or participation; no referendums since 1962; a strict regulation of oppurtunities in the education system; racist sentiments borne againt Malays (ie. the issue of why there are no Malay fighter pilots); Chinese hegemony, which is already natural by itself but is being strengthened consciously by the government; lack of separation of powers; lack of accountability; inability to recognise true multiculturalism; discrimination against those of mixed origins.

We definitely have a lot to "thank" for.

"If not for the government, would we be here today, living in such a beautiful place?"

If not for the early government, then yes. But you see, the government has the responsibility to keep up its laurels - using past successes won't cut it if current problems are not being addressed!

It is the people; the culture, the nation shaped. I love that very much. It is indeed very appreciable, that such issues I take to heart even halfway across the world.

But bear in mind, it is not an issue of ingratitude, but an issue of policy, liberty and accountability!

"We must not forget that we are such a small country. An island to be exact"

We cannot use this as an excuse to exploit our own people. We *are* developed. We have made it. It is time to move on to strengthen our position, and this cannot be done by using such blatantly unethical and inhumane policies.

Athens was but a city-state, a small entity too.

Your argument is quite naive - I suggest you get yourself an update on what the role of the government is, and what its responsibilities are.

We as citizens have every right to lobby what is constantly best for our country, and our society. We cannot simply allow a government to exist based on gratitude for its past succeses - we must have a government that will make good on continuing successes. With the current track record so far, I am getting less confident. These problems of Singapore can in fact be fixed very feasibly with a more vibrant administration (ie. stronger opposition presence) - unlike in the United States where the problems are considerably harder to resolve.

Being a dense city-state is in fact an advantage - we can afford to give more services and create more direct and participatory democracy for the same area that larger nations cannot afford to do.

" who has worked tirelessly on various community and school projects, and who dedicates her time to the community on weekends – I’ll spare you the soppy bits"

To get CIP points? Thats the reason why most teenagers do community projects etc.

"Your blog (as mentioned by Jo I believe) is relatively milder than most other internet forums I've seen out there relating to this issue."

Cos although I believe she is wrong, extreme personal attacks are uncalled for and serve no purposes.

the senior Wee has spoken. We should be so lucky that he nailed it on the head. It WAS DEREK'S FAULT - he should have shut up his face and carried on working for singapore
- shape up, ship out or go jump the tracks - but heaven forbid - do not comprain about the Govt......

The danger in being in an 'elite school' such as RJC lies in the possibility of an elitist attitude. Someone once told me, "having a group of elite in society is separate from having an elitist attitude", and there you see the fine line that marks the distinction between the two. There is no doubt that RJC is the top school in Singapore, thus marking them as 'elite', and of course leading to them getting the best of everything, from their huge campus, to the best teachers in school. However, it does in no way give them the right to lord it over us 'lesser beings'. Pray tell, who pays for their school building, tennis courts, lush green? Oh my! Maybe the phrase 'tax payers money' comes to mind. Now then, who pays tax? I suppose everyone would be the right answer, but then again, imagine the HORROR when you realize that everyone actually includes the 'pedestrians and lower class of society'! Would you not ever enter the school then? I'm not sure what they teach in RJC, but I hope that between their busy schedule and interesting GP classes where teachers tear students work into pieces, they teach them a sense of gratitude. There is no point in having a high IQ, being able to memorize all the answers from the Ten Year Series, if you can't sympathize with people and have maybe something that vaguely resembles some EQ. People who go to RJC are groomed for top jobs, probably going to become the next generation of ministers, and how scary is it if we have a bunch of 'uncaring elite' serving the country? The word here is serving, not dictating. What do ministers do exactly? They are supposed to help the country move forward, they serve the people, try and improve their lives. But what good is it if we train young people to be uncaring? So what if they are the elite? So what if they top the country in the O Levels and are 'effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin and are also fluent in French'? Are we going to use French to reach out to the masses then? Often 'expressing disdain for the Chinese language' is not a very nice thing to do. It is a fact that using Mandarin to reach out to the, and i quote her, 'neighbourhood poor', here is far more effective than using English. Wouldn't that make you a hypocrite if your very job depended on speaking to people in your mother tongue, but you hate it wholeheartedly? It is your mother tongue mind you.

Remember the incident with the Pope and how he quoted the Byzantine Emperor Constantine in one of his lectures? That caused a massive backlash because he was the Pope and what he said had even more impact as he represents the millions of Catholics around the world as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Likewise, Wee Shu Min's father is one of our men in white. Shouldn't she, no matter how much in need of a rant she was in, at least consider the fact that she is a Minister's daughter, and think twice before putting her rants down on paper (well in this case, on a blog)? I applaud her father's well meaning apology, but after all, a blog is a blog, and generally that kind of means that it's on the WORLD WIDE WEB, no? It can't be a violation of privacy if it isn't very private in the first place. That's almost the equivalent of wearing something with the words 'LOOK HERE' and then you say someone was harassing you afterwards. Publishing something on a blog, no matter how few people you think read it, acknowledges the fact that someone is going to find it sooner or later, and of course with these kind of comments, sooner than most. How can you say that it is a violation of privacy then?

Now, I know that her posts were old and that this issue is almost blowing over. Like they say, there is no use flogging a dead horse, but I am doing this because I am afraid. I am 18 as well. I belong to her generation. What am I to do if, in the near future, our country is run by people like her? There's only one thing I can say. Be afraid. Be Very Afraid.

lee,

Very well said.

Meritocracy led to Elitism.
Elitism is leading to Despotism.
Despotism will ultimately result in Tyranny.

Will the future of Singapore be donminated, controlled and run by tyrants?
That is my fear.
I am very afraid.

May be its time for me to look for greener pastures, or should I stay and fight a losing battle?

she deserve every single repucasion which happens now. be it vulgarities or curses.
if her pitiful amount of EQ was working at tat time this proberly wun be an issue now. just a screwed up pirated elite living in the shadows of a MP

Dear Shu Min,

What you have 'rashly' done has just successfully ended your otherwise excellent chance in snaring either a President Scholarship or PSC scholarship, which is the shortest path to being an elite XD.

Firstly, to Weikiat:

"Perhaps polite treatment of others is something not taught in schools of tomorrow's elites, which explained why I did not chose RI even when I easily met the criteria for it, and instead went for The Chinese High School. What a fine choice. We were taught to behave like and become real gentlemen there. Just look at my brainchild, The Wicked, ran with help from various kind TCHS juniors!"

I think this is an irrelevant, unqualified and uncalled for comment.
------------------------------------
My thoughts regarding this matter has changed a fair bit since I first read about this a few days back.

I personally do not get the full picture of what Shu-min is really trying to say behind the sarcasm, what I know is mainly from my own personal inference and from comments made by several other people who have tried to explain what she means.

1) I disagree with her method of delivery.

Insensitive would be one way to describe it. Inappropriate would be another. Yes, very impressive writing, but can her intended audience understand it? (I won't bother to speculate what made her write in this way, probably just an oversight on her part.)

If this was written to a friend who knows her personally yes,

2) She should have been more careful when posting such comments on a blog which is accessible to the public domain.

One can argue that her blog was for her friends only. But, even the PSC scholar who posted on a page which was password-protected (albeit easily cracked) had to apologise for his mistake. Hence, she should have probably been more aware of the consequences of posting on a platform which is publicly accessible.

3) Her argument was probably based on her lack of contact with the real world.

I do not know her personally, but being from RJ, I can probably understand what she has been through. Yes, her arguments may be sound theoretically, but as someone else has pointed out, these arguments do not work in practice. I do not believe this is a problem of her being elitist, rather just a problem of not having experienced the real world. One of my teachers from RJ once told us that JC is a very sheltered place. I think what made it worse is that she has always obtained a lot - GEP, Prefect, Councillor, Humanities Scholarship - hence possibly resulting in her believing that her own idea is correct. (Since it worked for her.) I may be wrong, but from personal experience and what I observed from school last time, I believe this is possibly what's happening.

4) I feel that she should not have closed down her blog/She might have offered a personal apology.

From what I see, ok, maybe she closed it down to move to Livejournal. Granted, I feel that she should have at least left an apology to Derek Wee, not here, not addressed to Weikiat or anybody else. This would have at the very least, cleared the air and allowed her to clarify what she said to avoid misunderstanding.

I think what is most important is that she can overlook all the nasty comments and instead see where she went wrong. Perhaps her friends can help her in this aspect.

lee said,

"Pray tell, who pays for their school building, tennis courts, lush green? Oh my! Maybe the phrase 'tax payers money' comes to mind. Now then, who pays tax? RJC is actually an independent college(not dependent on taxpayers' money) where local students pay up to $200-$300 a month.

http://www.rjc.edu.sg/newrjc/pros_stud_schfee.htm

So if you could not even get this basic right, the rest of what you mumbled is in deep question.

What about the secondary schools these people went to, and their primary school?

At one point or another, in one form or another, their education are still payed for by tax payers.

If Wei Kiat can learn from his mistake of calling qssq a "cute little bastard" who lacks moral integrity, I hope Elitegal will also learn hers.

"What about the secondary schools these people went to, and their primary school?

At one point or another, in one form or another, their education are still payed for by tax payers."

The focus here is on what elites learn in non-taxpayers' independent schools.

Would lee have said some of the things he did if he knew Elitegal is from a non-taxpayers' independent school?

If I'm not wrong, these independent schools are still funded by taxpayers money.

The 200 school fee is actually insufficient to run an entire school. The purpose of it is to provide more facilities and resources to its students on top of the basic ones offered in other JCs.

Also I disagree that you should judge what was being thought in schools based on whether they are independent or not.

I myself come from The Chinese High School (school fee 200 too, but I too poor, and PSLE did quite well, so was on EESIS and did not had to pay a single cent.)

Instead of looking down on neighborhood schools etc, we actually welcome them and don't feel that there is much difference between them and us. During racial harmony day, we even invited the entire West Spring Secondary School to come and celebrate with us, so that we are able to play host and also mix around with other people from different background and race.

The school understands the need for us to understand everybody.

Show me the proof that a few hundred thousand dollars a month is insufficient to maintain a school.

Also I disagree that you should judge what was being thought in schools based on whether they are independent or not.

I assumed you are directing this to lee's comments as he was the one who brought it up.

So Weikiat, what is your point? Are you trying to say that other top schools are not doing a good enough job like your alma mater?

And how would that tie in with this whole issue? Jo already mentioned specifically about what Shu-min did with regards to community work.

I'm saying its unfair to judge a school based on whether it is independent or not.

Dear Jo,
She NEEDS to participate in community and social work to buffer her CV and portfolio. If she doesn't, how is she going to get that overseas scholarship and come back to become the future AMK MP? When she runs for MPship, and our wonderful MSM publishes her past accomplishments to our gullible 66.6%, don't you think having these accomplishments when still a teenager stand her in good stead?

Who cares about Shu Min? After all, she is just an 18 year old (oops stepped on many 18 year old toes here).

It is her father, who seems to share her disdain for the people that he is supposed to serve that is the problem.

Shu Min is just a window of how this man feels about people who like/need some help.

{Anon says "She NEEDS to participate in community and social work to buffer her CV and portfolio. If she doesn't, how is she going to get that overseas scholarship and come back to become the future AMK MP?" }

Anon, don't be gullible lah. How is she going to become an MP? Your father is the Prime Minister ah? Or your grandfather?

You think you can do anyhow as you like ah? Why not make you an MP now?

Must be joking! Getting good academic result doesn't means you can be MP. You are so gullible, how sad!

Another one of those nation disgrace... show no sympathy to her fellow citizen or perhapes social issues... Well, whether we allow these people to lead our country also pretty much depends on the choices we make in future. Having to identify all these nation brats can very much tell us where they stand & be more careful with our choices.

Wee Shu-min is just a random sampling of the elite-would-be class in our society.
And we hit the jackpot!

Since they are a very guarded and protected species, it is very difficult for the common people to find out their inner feelings and thoughts.
So, this example of an elite-to-be really frightens a lot of people.

Though one can say that one swallow does not make a summer, in this case I am going to make it an exception. I am more inclined to believe that this one black swallow does signals to us commoners that a very cold winter is out there, approaching with all its hailstorms and torrents.

I am writing this as an acquaintance of Shu Min's who once planned and carried out a CIP project with her back in 2004. While I do admit that the general perception of her in RJC (I'm a Rafflesian as well) is that of 'arrogance' (if I may call it that), I did not have any reason at all to question her commitment and sincerity during those few months of CIP. People may say that I'm just defending her as a friend (like Jo's post), but I would like to state the fact that I've only spoken to her once these 2 years in RJC (I'm in science and she's in humanities, etc). I have no personal motive nor benefit for vouching for her.

In addition, I would like to question the reasoning of those who have taken the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and hurl abuse at RJC and the GEP. Is it due to some repressed jealousy or what? RJC's reputation is not and should not even be a part of this issue. There are countless other blogs out there that serve only to insult and degrade others, yet everyone seems to have taken delight in picking on Raffles just over this incident. I'm not doubting the seriousness of the consequences stemming from Shu Min's post, but it just irks me whenever people skirt the issue just to attack RJ (or the GEP for that matter). The issue here is on elitism. Does the Singaporean elite comprise solely of RJC students? Why is it that people are questioning RJC's teaching methods? Its just absurd. Nobody has the right to hold a person to higher moral standards just because he/she scored more A1s in the O levels than 99.99% of the Singaporean students.

Or let's put it this way, she was the one who tarnished and damaged the name of RJC. Who to blame? Wee ShuMin! Short and sweet!

Shu Min:

Whatever you are like in real life, fact is that you have displayed a clear condescending attitude in your original posting on your blogsite. And mind you, 'condescending' is a mild word to use in your case.

Personally, I find it hard for someone whose friends claim is a nice person to even display such an attidue. "Heat of the moment'? It sounds like a convenient excuse.

Nice people - genuinely nice people - would not first, adopt such an atitude. Second, genuinely nice people would not make fun or make derogatory remaks about people who are going through real problems (unlike you in your elite castle in the air). Thirdly, genuinely nice people would not have to get their father to apologise on her behalf.

You have failed on all counts.

Till now, we have yet to hear a public apology from you - not to us, but to Mr Derek Wee.

You are a horrendous shame to RJC.

Why should top students not be held to higher moral standards? We can understand if people who are relatively uneducated default because they "don't know any better" or "no one taught them how to behave." We have no such excuse. If we are really as blessed with intelligence as the public think, why should we not be inculcated with the corresponding amount of appreciation and humility? Are we not better equipped to tell right from wrong? Isn’t it even more important for future leaders of Singapore to be able to act appropriately?

I am just as disappointed as anyone. While I do not know her personally, I would just like to say that her views are not representative of that of RJC students in general, and my own experiences there as an RJC student have convinced me that she is the exception to the norm. It may not be on solid logical grounds to make attacks on RJC, but it is understandable. If I act in an obnoxious way abroad, it reflects badly upon Singaporeans - in the exact same way.

A blog is not private. It is a public space.
Political personalities and celebrities are not private individuals. They are public personalities. As are their families. Whether they like it or not.

why is she on a scholarship? isnt she from a well to do family? stop wasting mr derek wee's and all 40 year old's tax payer's money.

My initial response on reading Ms Wee's blog entry was that of outrage. Similar in many ways to some of what has been expressed on this blog. Yes her comments were hurtful and highly inappropriate. She deserves to be taught a lesson. Certainly.

But I must admit, the more I read on this saga, the more that I feel that Ms Wee is recieving more than a just due. There's a great deal of unwarranted malice directed at this 18 year old girl, ranging from snide remarks about her figure to the outright mention of rape.

I think any men who made that suggestion ought to be ashamed of themselves. If you have a daughter, try to imagine someone saying the same of her. And dont say that "your daughter would never say something like that" because by bringing in talk of physical hurt, you have already said something MUCH WORSE.

So yes. As singaporeans we need to talk about looking after our unfortunate better. But leave the poor girl alone. I think she's learnt her lesson. On that note:

The next time you talk to a psychiatric patient or an HIV patient, remember the outrage you've expressed against Ms Wee here and be nicer to the unfortunate. As a medical professional I see too many singaporeans treat my patients shamefully. I hope they arent the same singaporeans denouncing Ms Wee now.

PS Wei Kiat. May i suggest you remove the bikini clad picture of Ms Wee from your blog. Its singularly distasteful, and inconsistent with your claims of being moderate.

yixuan says:
"Nobody has the right to hold a person to higher moral standards just because he/she scored more A1s in the O levels than 99.99% of the Singaporean students."

Nobody expects her to be of higher moral standard. We just want her to be a caring human being, that is not a high standard.

What most people are concerned about is her attitude, which is not in line with that of a normal human being.

We are more concerned about the quality of our future civil servants, if she chooses to become one of them.

Anyway, we do not need a person like her in any of our government institutions, if she can't serve her fellow Singaporeans with the right attitude.

Dear Wei Kiat,
I was reading an excerpt of your reaction to Shu Min in my lunch time (forwarded by a friend) and thought that I shoudl write to you and say "Bravo". You have restored my faith in Singapore youth. It was well written and very persuasive. I have two kids, one a scholar (daughter) and my son is from RI (now performing NS). If they turn out to be like the youth wing of the Nazi party, then I will be devastated. Like you, I believe that Shu Min is an exception and a product of bad up-bringing. As a parent, I would take responsibility for such bad manners and attitude. Thanks again for your views and comments.

Uncle Edmond

assuming she is not a minister's daughter, assuming she's not from RJC, I wonder how much focus made towards her unkindly, lack of grace remark would she gathers?
Maybe to a degree and lesser perhaps.
The fact that she literally 'slaps" some one and then said she didn't mean it, was really a bad taste.
Well educated, what a pity- no love, no grace.
I shall be sad as a parent becos' it reflects my negligence in bringing her up as a good citizen, not an uncaring one.

You guys suck for thinking Wee Shu Min is inhumane. The fact is, people like her helps to control the pests in Singapore who thinks life is hard. We elitists in Singapore believes that if you think life is hard, you are incapable and you just suck. Wee Shu Min is such a smart RJC girl. The blood that flows in her is SMART BLOOD, it's not just what she believes but take my word for it, we have scientific proof she has SMART BLOOD. Me and her truly believes in that - as can be seen from the way we talk about it and we make no apologies to what we are saying. If you want, we can at best give you a half hearted, public pressure driven, strategically placed defensive statements kind of apology.

So please stop your shitty crappings. Before she was born, she was so freaking smart to have decided to be born in a minister's family and born in a family that don't have to worry about daily living. She's damn f%$@*!g smart - I mean even if she is born in AFRICA in some third world country she will still be the freaking elitist. She has decided all these things and ALL that happens to her elitist life is within her elitist control.

The fact is, can you guys do that? NO! Get the freaking hell out of our elitist uncaring face! We decide where we are born and we decide which family we are from and hence we decide if we have difficulties making a living. You CAN earn EVERYTHING in life and there is NO such thing as HEAD START you frailings! Singaporeans are all BORN FAIR can't you brainless people tell? Everyone is born with $100,000/- in their hands for your information.

Even the older generations of grandparents, I mean sorry to say that but if they had the FORESIGHT, they all would have learnt English and find a way and just WORK HARD and they would ALL have a better life. Unfortunately, our grandparents decided not to be elitists and they pay the price to be mocked today by us, who at 18 year old, already is able to spout waves upon waves of elitist wisdom from our very deep and profound upbringing. We pity you frailings who thinks life is hard - Life is fair so long you are an elitist.

You suckers can't do shit to decide all that. Everything in life is based on ABILITIES and CAPABILITIES. I'm sure if she wanted to, she has the ability to foresee her comments sounded extremely retarded to most Singaporeans but guess what? She deliberately made a choice to withhold her GREAT and GODLIKE FORESIGHT and ELITE abilities and muster the UNIQUE ELITIST COURAGE to say the truth that hurts - "RIGHT IN YOUR FACE, BROTHER!"

Her elitist mind already knew what she was saying and that elitistic expectation that she will say something totally retarded was also part of her plans. The apology was also well designed by a team of elites. In short, SHE planned everything. I mean, don't be naive to think an elitist can really make such a moronic and brainless mistake of having to make herself and her father apologize for something later right? It was all elitistically planned.

She personifies Elitism in the most intrinsic way. She dreams elitism, eats elitism, gives out elitist scent, salivates elitism, shits elite looking faeces and is made of tonnes of elitist fats.

We elitist salute Wee Shu Min - The epitomy of EliteDom on Earth. What shall we remember her for? From RJC? Nah. A minister's daughter? Nah. A smart girl? Nah. But for certainty - The Most Elite Minded Elitist who Eliticize her Elitrifying Fingers to Elitify Her Elitist blog. Sorry Derek, you suck. The whole Singapore DON'T hate Wee Shu Min. The whole Singapore will remember her well and forget you.

We hereby salute - Elitist Wee Shu Min the Elite who Eliticize with Elitricity. Along with her Elitist husband, Elitist children, Elitist Dog and Elitist Maid, coupled with her Elitist mole and Elitist fats - we wish Shu Min good luck with her elitist endeavours, and may life be wonderful for the rest of her elitist family.

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of ponzy-like structure, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and my first investment was 500 dollars only.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my blog to get additional info.

Everything about horse betting

Successful horse race wagering takes a degree of skill and research. Unlike most sporting match ups where you have a fifty-fifty chance of winning by random choice, with an average field of 8 horses, the horse player only has a 12.5% chance of winning by chance. Let's put fun into the sport for the casual fan. A two horse match up takes wagering on horse racing back to its earliest and simplest form; "I bet my horse can beat yours!" But there's no need to stop there, horse racing offers a myriad of options for wagering; which horse will be in the lead at each point of call, which jockey or trainer will have the most wins for the day, and how about betting a horse to lose. These are just a few options that come to mind.
horce racing odds
Another sad fact is that more than 400 in-racing horses die every year in the UK alone. They may die on the course itself, from injuries received in training or be killed by their owners - considered no longer commercially viable.

The Triple Crown, like so many of our best traditions, wasn't created, it grew into being. During the late 1800's three different tracks created races to test the new crop of three year olds. These three races, the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby were held in the same year for the first time in 1875. It wasn't until 44 years later that Sir Barton (1919) became the first horse to win all three. The term, Triple Crown, wasn't coined until 1930 when Daily Racing Form's columnist, Charles Hatton, used it while covering Gallant Fox's winning efforts.

the derby bet
Sweetnorthernsaint ridden by Kent Desormeaux was favored to win the Derby, but finished a disappointing seventh by 13 lengths. That though, after a bumped start and being steadied before finally tiring. With a lifetime 3 wins out of 7 starts, all 3 have come this year, and the shorter distance of the Preakness might be more to his liking.

I searched everywhere for a great deal and finally found it at Ordio in Westfield Bondi Junction. I phoned them first and asked every question I could think of and everything was answered to my satisfaction so I went ahead and made the purchase. Shipping was very fast. Everything was perfect. ShoppingBlogging.com - Online Shopping for Christmas

It appears each yr persons begin hunting before and before for Christmas. Final calendar year I began on the starting of October and had all of the shows wrapped from the end on the month. This yr I started out even sooner to carry benefit of the number of outlets providing mid calendar year revenue.

Visit Now : Shopping Online

Why Store Before

Hunting before has two major benefits - acquiring healthier offers and avoiding the vacation rush. Nonetheless it has its drawbacks as well. Numerous toy and game producers specifically, only launch their most current merchandise pretty near for the holidays. This implies that if you're likely to store inside the center for this calendar year, you won't have the ability to obtain the most current goods relating to the marketplace. One way to acquire close to this would be to pre-order. Actually pre-ordering items may well even fetch you savings and totally free presents.
Christmas Shopping
But in somewhat a handful of instances, if you ever maintain your eyes open, it is possible to get improved bargains all through the slow or off season, retail smart. A sizeable selection of mobile phone producers launch their most up-to-date versions while in the center of this calendar year. This indicates that previous types is going to be likely at rock bottom rates about two weeks prior to the launch on the replacement.

Some most people carry buying before towards the severe but hunting proper following the holidays for any up coming holidays. Post vacation revenue are at times even improved than pre-holiday product sales as departmental merchants make an effort to obvious excess stock by providing ridiculous savings.

Needful Adjustments

Moving up Christmas searching a couple of many weeks will take just a bit adjustment, spending budget smart, specifically all through the very first 12 several weeks on the timetable alter. However it doesn't carry a whole lot to acquire used to it. Its just a matter of maintaining to some set routine of placing slightly money apart for reveals.

The Gift Conundrum

Apart from producing purchases for the duration of revenue, ordering in bulk can conserve you quite a lot of money. Its usually very good to break recipients into a couple of groups very first - near household, loved ones, near close friends, good friends, colleagues - you receive the thought. Performing so enables you to organize your ordering greater. That stated I only have two recipient groups - instant loved ones and other people.

Obviously you'd probably wish to purchase way more private and thoughtful presents for that most people closer for you. But for even more generic presents, I recommend pack looking, which can be just like pack hunting, only nicer.

Pack buying right here implies gathering a few of associates with comparable browsing lists after which ordering in bulk to carry benefit of economies of scale. I usually pack store with two other consumers in terms of generic presents. You'll come across that you possibly can get extremely good presents like wine glasses at most certainly terrific rates whenever you pack store.

Work out ferments the humors, casts them into their adapted channels, throws substandard redundancies, and helps nature in those confidential distributions, without which the association cannot subsist in its vigor, nor the typification fake with cheerfulness.

As your conviction is strengthened you determination declare that there is no longer the requisite to have a meaning of oversee, that things inclination flow as they will, and that you purpose surge with them, to your extraordinary joy and benefit.

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you desire them to be, since you cannot prevail upon yourself as you thirst to be

Be not fuming that you cannot win others as you hankering them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you thirst to be

A comfortable noachian age is the reward of a well-spent youth. Instead of its bringing dejected and dolour prospects of rot, it would hand out us hopes of timeless lad in a better world.

A contented old maturity is the award of a well-spent youth. Instead of its bringing wretched and woebegone prospects of degenerate, it would give us hopes of unchanged lad in a bettor world.

A untroubled old maturity is the prize of a well-spent youth. A substitute alternatively of its bringing glum and dolour prospects of decay, it would hand out us hopes of unchanged youth in a bettor world.
