Self Directed Learning in ABC Junior College

Today, the last 2 maths tests were given out by the teacher.

Someone asked, "Teacher, are you going through the correction for tests?"

"No," came the reply, "you are suppose to find out how to do yourself. This is self-directed learning. I'll only be giving out the answers."

In the end, the answers were not given out, and correction for tests is now covered under the novel concept of SDL. I find it ridicuous that teachers can REFUSE to teach students. We can't even learn from our own mistakes in the tests. Yes yes, we are suppose to find out how to solve those questions from our classmates. Then dear teacher, why are you here in the first place. Why are you even paid by the people's money? Your actions seems like you are doing volunteer work.

Several topics in the syllabus were already placed under SDL, we were suppose to read the notes and do the tutorial without any help from the teacher. SDL even stated that the teacher would not be going through tutorials of topics placed under SDL. This is in AJC. In CHS, my alma mater, all my teachers would make sure everyone fully understood every topics, be it SDL or not. AJC has totally disgraced the notion of SDL by using it as a convenient excuse for lazy teachers.

If i were to know that college life is like that i would have bought myself a couple of Ten-Year Series with questions and answers for everything covered under the alevel syllabus. Then, i'm going to be a private candidate and not bother to go to any college. Teacher or not teacher, you still have to learn everything on your own.

Why not spend the time more fruitfully?

Well, I was from AJC, a batch earlier than you.

Agree that SDL sucks. Should let the P know how SDL is carried out in our school. Maybe she could do something about it. Maybe.

Anyway, I found your blog some months ago when I was surfing in the school library. Good blog, I'd say.

Study hard for the A's!

we are a batch of old ex-ABC students, already mature professinals in our early 30s. All of us somehow unanimously think that the school sucks. Some reasons listed below:

1) The physical building itself is really bleak, monstrous, piece of concrete. Too hot, hard, uncoordinated extensions done over time, too little greenery. (We came from a school which has one of the most beautiful landscape, so all the more uneasy)

2) there was no school spirit whatsoever. The students come from neighbourhood schools, quite ah lian and beng. We were from premier schools, and were quite shock when first encountered these students from neighbourhood schools. Dont' ask me why we didn't enter top 5 JC, many of us in fact scored 10 and below, which was pretty good during my time. But we were too playful and rebellious then to want to go top 5 lah....but really regretted

3) the staff lacked quality. I vividly remember a GP tutor, who happened to be our Civics tutor too. She only cared about the males who knows how to 'flirt' and heehee haha with her. But the girls were shy, and quiet, and she seemed to ignored them like transparent glass. Naturally, we did badly for GP. The girls also had deflated ego during those 2 years under her. But some of us later managed honours in University.

4) it is a cannot make it JC ...no matter how you put it. Btw, they painted it some zany colors at the entrance, some effort there, but really only skin deep.

we don;t have any positive memory about the JC except for our bunch of playful, last minute study kind of people. Of course , there were also very kiasu, clever people, but we were not those, and one of the last science class, with rojak subjects, and subject dropouts being common after 1st year kind...heehee

by the way, the female GP tutor is still there. I guess these people got stuck in teaching, have no experience outside of school environment, so even want to go out and work also cannot find jobs really.

haha. not that they cannot live outside jc. they have no life watsoever.

I'm pretty much lucky to have Mr Ang (computing teacher) last year as PDG tutor too. He's the best. He will close one eye to things that we as students would enjoy that the school board blatantly forbids. Things like eating during computer practical and the likes.

However he retired and thats the end of fun.

Another interesting teacher is Mr Patrick Lim. His teaching style is unique to the extend that students who do not know him will think he's damn fierce and strict. in fact, he's very nice. He'll take my friend's hockey stick and pretend to hit people who nv do tutorial and sleep in class. He also makes some interesting comments about things like Singapore Idol and my recent appearance in the Straits Times. He even asked me for autograph because i am "famous".

Other than these 2 great guys and some of the best classmates to be with (i'm lucky enuff to be in a class wif all students from SAP schools), AJC life is totally shit.

same as you, i scored quite ok for Olevel, getting a 9pt which would warrant me schools like njc and even hci if i bothered to appeal. But instead i chosed to slack and here's the pile of shit i landed in.

Sigh. Somehow I keep thinking that you would have had a much better life in NJC; even if not, one glance across the road and you see your proud alma mater. But things cannot change, fortunately it's only one more year.

And it's not surprising that the school spirit of AJC is just as you have mentioned. Considering that their JC1 orientation lasted only 3 days, which was very short compared to the 8-day orientation in Hwa Chong. I was almost wondering, how much fun do you expect the freshmen to have in three short days. And just when the fun is at its climax, everything stops and the mugging period starts. No wonder AJC becomes the mugger school you describe.

its 5 days, not 3 days.
